Mallorca vote: Més and Frente Amplio join forces
Mallorca’s 29 November vote takes shape: Més and Frente Amplio are joining forces across the Balearic Islands for Spain’s general election. From Wednesday, 21 October, parties and alliances can submit their candidate lists for Congress and the Senate to provincial electoral boards. They have until midnight on Monday, 26 October.
The lists will appear in Spain’s official gazette on 28 October, but they will not yet be final. Electoral boards can flag errors, and parties will have 48 hours from notification to put them right. The boards have until 2 November to confirm the candidates; the final lists will be published the next day.
The alliance’s candidates also face a new rule. For the first time in a general election, women and men must alternate on Congress lists. Previously, each sex had to account for at least 40% of candidates. The new rule also applies when Senate candidates are grouped on a list.
Parties and alliances that won no seats in either chamber at the previous general election must collect signatures from at least 0.1% of registered voters in each constituency where they plan to stand. Groups formed by voters need signatures from at least 1%.
