Four MÉS councillors challenge Galmés over Mallorca honours

Four MÉS per Mallorca councillors have written to Consell de Mallorca president Llorenç Galmés, accusing him of bringing party politics into Saturday’s 2026 awards, honours and distinctions ceremony. The group says his speech turned an institutional event into a platform for attacks on opposition parties and partisan positions. MÉS had announced on Sunday that it would send the letter.

The councillors say the ceremony belonged to all Mallorcans and was held to recognise people and organisations for their contribution to the common good, whatever their political views. That made political criticism in the president’s speech especially inappropriate, they argue.

MÉS accepts that Galmés can defend his government’s policies as president of the Consell de Mallorca, the island council. It also says he is entitled to challenge political opponents as a leader of the PP.

But the party says those are separate roles which must be kept for separate settings. It says Galmés must show restraint, respect and an awareness that he represents not only those who voted for him, but also people who disagree with his policies and support a different model for Mallorca.

The councillors are not asking Galmés to give up his political beliefs or stop defending his government, they say. They want him to do so in the proper forum, and hope the letter prevents a repeat of what they say happened on Saturday.
