Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands: MÉS per Mallorca rules out running under a nationwide left-wing ticket in the snap general election on 29 November. Its federation, Ara Més, said on Monday that any united left-wing candidacy in the Balearics should be built island by island.

Més per Menorca and Ara Eivissa also belong to Ara Més. The federation does not want to join Frente Amplio, the new project backed by parties allied to Sumar, as an organisation. The island parties want to negotiate any election deals directly instead.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the early election on Monday after Congress rejected government housing decrees on Friday. The left now has a tight deadline: parties have ten days to register coalitions once the dissolution of parliament is published in Spain’s official state gazette.

Podemos wants open primaries on 14 and 15 October as a condition for a joint candidacy. The Sumar parties want Podemos to bring that proposal to the negotiating table rather than debate it in public. Frente Amplio still has no lead candidate.
