Mallorca Senate list: two MÉS women face a vote

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca has two candidates for one place on a joint Senate list: Rosa Cursach and Aina Amengual put their names forward on Friday, 23 October. MÉS per Mallorca members meet that afternoon in Lloseta, Mallorca, to choose which woman will represent the party on the list agreed with the Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands (PSIB). Cursach sits on the Mallorca Island Council; Amengual is a councillor in Marratxí, Mallorca.

The choice comes after Thursday’s deadline passed without a single candidate. MÉS extended it until Friday morning. Its partner, PSIB, has already named Catalina Cladera, its spokeswoman on the Mallorca Island Council, as its candidate.

The Lloseta meeting will also vote on a candidate for Spain’s Congress of Deputies. Carme Gomila is the only contender. She coordinates Ara Més and leads Esquerra Republicana in the Balearic Islands. If MÉS members back her, the Ara Més federal committee must still confirm her candidacy on Saturday morning.

Gomila could replace the current deputy, Vicenç Vidal, if she is confirmed and the Ara Més-Front Ampli alliance wins the seat again. Vidal decided this week not to stand. MÉS coordinator Lluís Apesteguia thanked him for his work and said he believed Vidal had put the political project first.
