Balearics migrant arrivals: PP demands answers

The PP is pressing for a parliamentary hearing into migrant arrivals in the Balearic Islands, asking Alfonso Rodríguez, the central government’s delegate on the islands, to explain the situation. On Saturday, 5 September, the party’s parliamentary spokesman Sebastià Sagreras said the group would submit the request again. He pointed to what he says Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez told Congress about a report warning of a high risk.

Sagreras said Sánchez had made clear that the report concerned arrivals by sea to mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, rather than the border with Ceuta. The PP spokesman accused the Spanish government and PSOE of trying to dispute Sánchez’s remarks through anonymous sources.

He also said he was surprised that neither Rodríguez nor any of the Mallorca-based secretaries of state had responded directly.

The PP says it will again seek Rodríguez’s appearance before the regional parliament. Sagreras said that if the delegate refuses once more, the party will conclude that information was withheld and that no exceptional measures were taken despite the risk cited for the Balearic Islands.
