72 migrants reach Balearics in five small boats

Two boats carrying 32 migrants were stopped off Cabrera and on Formentera on Tuesday, taking the day’s total arrivals in the Balearics to 72 people in five boats. The Spanish government delegation in the islands said all were from the Maghreb.

The first boat was intercepted at 19:33, six miles off Cabrera, with 12 people aboard. Guardia Civil maritime officers, the maritime rescue service, a reinforcement patrol from the Guardia Civil company in Manacor and the command’s citizen-security unit took part in the rescue.

A second boat, carrying 20 people, was intercepted at 20:35 in the S'Estufador area of Formentera. Officers from the Guardia Civil post on Formentera and the command’s citizen-security unit were involved in that operation.

The two late arrivals added to three boats reported earlier in the day on Formentera, bringing Tuesday’s total to 72 migrants.
