Formentera: sixth migrant boat takes total to 89

A sixth migrant boat has been intercepted off Formentera, taking the number of people found on the island in recent hours to 89. Guardia Civil officers stopped the vessel at Pilar de la Mola at 07.40 on Monday. The 13 people on board were from the Maghreb, the Spanish government delegation in the Balearic Islands said.

The latest interception followed the rescue of 76 other migrants who arrived on Formentera in five boats on Sunday.

The first of those was stopped at 16.36, 36 miles south-east of Formentera, with 16 people aboard: 11 from sub-Saharan Africa and five from the Maghreb.

One minute later, officers found another 16 people 0.01 miles north of Es Caló de Sant Agustí. A further 17 were intercepted along the coast at Pilar de la Mola at 19.00. All those aboard these two boats were from the Maghreb.

Earlier on Sunday, a boat carrying 15 people was found at s'Estufador. At 13.00, officers intercepted another boat with 12 people from the Maghreb in the s'Algar torrent area.
