Formentera clears 12 migrant boats, 150 more remain
The Formentera Island Council clears 12 migrant boats from the island’s coast, but around 150 more remain at a waste site in Es Cap. The council reported the removals from Es Ram, s’Estufador and ses Pesqueres Altes on Friday 30 October 2026. It plans to remove six more boats on Friday under a contract covering 18 in all.
The boats, known locally as pateras, are taken to Eivissa, where a company destroys them. The council says clearing abandoned boats from the shore should reduce their impact on the environment and the landscape.
But new boats keep arriving. The council says those at Es Cap are waiting for the Spanish government’s delegation to collect them and take them to Eivissa.
Formentera’s environment councillor, Verónica Castelló, says one-off clearances are not enough. She wants the government delegation to act continuously and provide sufficient resources, saying the island cannot keep bearing the environmental and safety consequences of the boats left behind.
