Mallorca boat grounds as 59 migrants reach Balearics

A small boat ran aground off Cala Figuera, in the municipality of Santanyí on Mallorca, on Tuesday as 59 migrants arrived in four boats at points across the Balearics. Sixteen people of Maghrebi origin got off the boat after it grounded at 16.35. The Civil Guard and Maritime Rescue took part in the rescue operations.

The first group, 15 people of Maghrebi origin, was found near Pilar de la Mola on Formentera at about 12.30, according to the Spanish government delegation in the Balearics.

Further boats off Formentera and Cabrera

At 13.45, rescuers found another boat 14 miles south-east of Formentera, carrying 17 people of Maghrebi origin.

A further 11 people of Maghrebi origin were rescued from a boat two miles south of Cabrera at about 15.00.

The grounding at Cala Figuera was the fourth arrival of the day, bringing the total to 59 people in four boats.
