Mallorca migrant boats among eight carrying 135 people
Migrant boats reach Porto Colom and Cala Santanyí on Mallorca on Tuesday: authorities intercept 135 people in eight boats across Mallorca and Formentera. Another 51 people arrive later in four boats across Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
The arrivals follow two boats spotted off the Balearic Islands on Monday. Authorities intercept one carrying 17 people 1.5 miles off Formentera. A second boat carries 25 people 10 miles off Cabrera.
Across the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands and the Region of Murcia, more than 1,600 migrants arrive by sea in the week from 23 to 30 October, according to an Europa Press tally. The largest numbers are reported in the Canaries: four boats bring 568 people to El Hierro on 23 October, and three more carry 252 people the next day. A boat carrying 41 people also reaches Cala Dentoles, near Cartagena, that Saturday.
The week ends with two deaths off El Hierro. Rescuers reach a boat carrying 113 migrants south of the island on Friday; two men aboard have died, Maritime Rescue sources tell Europa Press.
