Mallorca: Appeals slow migrant child transfers

Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, is at the centre of a dispute over the transfer of dozens of unaccompanied migrant children from other parts of Spain: legal appeals are slowing the moves, regional president Marga Prohens says. Speaking in the Balearic parliament in Palma on Wednesday, 21 October, Prohens said the regional government’s legal service had challenged the transfers. She was responding to Vox, which had called irregular migration the biggest risk facing the Balearics.

Prohens said 25,000 migrants had reached the islands’ coasts during Pedro Sánchez’s eight years in power. Arrivals in the Balearics exceeded those in the Canary Islands for the first time last summer, she said.

The island councils are responsible for 919 migrant children, according to Prohens. She also claimed that Formentera’s island council would have gone bankrupt under a left-wing government and been unable to provide its services to people on the island.
