Balearic job rise: union credits migrant legalisation
Across the Balearic Islands, including Mallorca, more people are registered with Social Security in September: the UGT trade union credits the exceptional regularisation of migrants’ status. After unemployment and Social Security figures were published on Friday, 2 October, the union’s secretary-general in the islands, Pedro Homar, said unemployment was barely rising while the number paying contributions was growing significantly. He said the extra contributions also boosted public revenue.
Homar wants employers to keep people on permanent contracts with seasonal breaks working for as long as possible. More than 188,000 people on those contracts were active in June. He says a longer tourism season could help them build up more contribution time and receive better benefits in winter.
But jobs are not enough, he said: people cannot have a good quality of life unless the right to housing is guaranteed. Homar called it a disappointment that two housing decrees under debate in Spain’s Congress on Friday were unlikely to be ratified.
