Mallorca migrant row: PSIB says minors are used as tools

Mallorca’s row over migrant minors is deepening after the PSIB accused island council president Llorenç Galmés of using them to attack Spain’s government. The socialist party spoke out after his visit to Ses Salines, Mallorca, on 23 September. It says the PP-led Council of Mallorca has failed to say how many migrant minors are in its care.

PSIB council spokeswoman Catalina Cladera said it was unacceptable to turn young migrants into a weapon in a party-political fight. She accused Galmés of reducing the people arriving in small boats to figures, problems and headlines.

Cladera also criticised him for again focusing on the boats, returns and Frontex, the European border and coast guard agency. She said Vox had argued that the normal capacity for taking in foreign minors should be zero.

The PSIB has demanded that the PP make clear whether its approach is based on responsibility and the rights of children, or is increasingly shaped by Vox’s rhetoric. Cladera called for a joint response with Spain and Europe.

She said border controls, action against people-smuggling gangs and managed migration could go together without abandoning humanity. The party rejected political blockages and confrontations driven by party interest.
