Mallorca: Marga Prohens wants the Balearic Islands to return migrants who arrive irregularly, pointing to returns she says have begun in Ceuta. Speaking in the Balearic Parliament in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday, 20 October, the regional president also called for an end to irregular arrivals on the islands.

Prohens points to Ceuta

Prohens argued that if migrants arriving irregularly can be returned from Ceuta, the same should be possible in the Balearics. She accused Spain’s central government of leaving the islands to handle arrivals without its help.

More than 900 children in care

Prohens said the Balearics were caring for more than 900 unaccompanied migrant children — more than twice the normal capacity. She described the system as overcrowded.

She also named population growth, housing and changes to the economy as major challenges. More people put pressure on public services, infrastructure and homes, she said. Prohens defended rules requiring several years of residence to qualify for certain benefits and public housing.
