Mallorca migrant row: Galmés demands Rodríguez quit

At a roadworks launch in Sóller on Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, council president Llorenç Galmés called on 4 September for Alfonso Rodríguez to resign immediately. Galmés accused the Spanish Government’s delegate in the Balearics of withholding information about migrants reaching the archipelago’s shores.

The demand came after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez appeared in Congress. Galmés said Rodríguez must give a full account of why the information was allegedly hidden despite the existence of reports.

He said Mallorca had been left insecure, unprotected and abandoned once again. Galmés also renewed his call for Frontex to be activated in the Balearics, saying this was needed to stop criminal networks and boat arrivals known as pateras, as well as to prevent further deaths at sea.

Referring to the latest patera to reach Mallorca, Galmés claimed those arriving were prepared and had clear instructions. He said they light a flare to signal their arrival and then receive support from Spain’s central government.

Galmés said the government must explain why it allegedly concealed the report, why it did not act and what it plans to do now. He also claimed that irregular migrants were continuing to arrive, putting the lives of Mallorca’s people at risk.
