Palma report says migrants do not take Spanish jobs

Migrant workers do not push Spanish employees out of jobs, social services or benefits, a report presented in Palma says. Antón Costas, president of the Economic and Social Council, set out the findings on Thursday. The report examines migration across Spain.

Costas said migrant workers do not replace Spanish staff and instead “benefit” them. Many arrive with limited qualifications and mainly work in tourism, the primary sector and construction.

The report says migrant workers earn less than Spanish employees at first. It takes four or five years for their working conditions to become similar. Costas said that, as migrants take lower-skilled jobs, Spanish workers move into better conditions.
