5,627 migrants put Balearics ahead of Canaries

The Balearic Islands have recorded 5,627 migrant arrivals by 15 September, moving 35 ahead of the Canary Islands for the first time. The total is 144 higher than at the same point last year. Spain’s Interior Ministry published the figures in its fortnightly report on irregular arrivals from 1 January to 15 September.
So far, 303 boats have reached the islands, eight more than during the same period last year. The Canary Islands recorded 5,592 arrivals, a fall of 55.1%.
Across Spain, 21,906 migrants arrived by sea and land this year, according to the ministry’s tally. That is 16.5% fewer than in the previous year.
