Mallorca: 5,627 arrivals spark migration clash

More migrants have reached the Balearic Islands this year than the Canary Islands, with 5,627 arrivals by 15 September. In Palma, Mallorca, on Friday, PSIB candidate Rosario Sánchez accused the Balearic Government of using migration for party-political ends. She called for it to work with Spain’s central government as she described the situation in the Mediterranean as a humanitarian drama.

Sánchez, who is standing for the Balearic presidency in the 2027 election, said migration movements needed to be legal and orderly. She argued that the Government was limiting itself to partisan political positions rather than taking real steps to provide humanitarian reception.

The Socialist politician also said the issue was being used as an election tool to set people against one another, “the poor against those who are even poorer”.

She then turned her fire on Balearic president Marga Prohens and the PP’s tourism policy. Since the PP took office, Sánchez said, the Balearic tourism offer had been in “absolute chaos”, pointing to demonstrations and residents’ perception of the situation.

Sánchez said nobody was putting the brakes on tourism growth and accused the Balearic Government of standing by while visitor numbers grew without limit.
