Mallorca: Prohens calls migration inaction desperate

Neighbours in Colònia de Sant Jordi, Mallorca, shut themselves inside their homes in fear after a boat arrived on Monday, Balearic president Marga Prohens told parliament in Palma on Tuesday, 15 September. She called the central government’s inaction over the continuing arrival of irregular migrants in the Balearics “desperate” and said it created “enormous helplessness”.

Prohens was responding to Vox spokeswoman Manuela Cañadas during the parliamentary session. She said she had urged the central government to react to rising arrivals even before becoming president, and criticised the PSIB socialists for describing them only as “significant increases”.

Letters and warnings

The Balearic leader said she had lost count of the letters sent to Madrid warning about the conditions in which the islands must receive migrants. She also said Spain’s CNI intelligence service had warned that regularisation was creating an incentive effect.

Cañadas said more than 5,300 irregular migrants had reached the Balearics this year, after more than 7,000 last year. She said the situation should not be treated as normal and argued that its effects were already being felt on the islands’ streets.
