Canary Islands migration: PP wants returns, not transfers
On Tenerife in the Canary Islands, the People’s Party wants migrant returns to replace transfers under a proposed change to Spain’s migration policy. Its national spokesman, Borja Sémper, set out the position on Friday 16 October. He said the party would pursue it in the next parliamentary term across Spain, particularly in the Canary Islands.
Sémper said Spain could not take in more migrants who arrived without a job. Children reaching Spain’s shores should first receive humanitarian care, he said, then return to their families. If their families could not be found, he said their country of origin should take responsibility for them.
The People’s Party has also asked Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to appear before parliament over its claims that Moroccan vessels entered Spanish waters, including an alleged incident after the Spanish King and Queen visited Ceuta and Melilla. The Spanish government has denied the allegations.
