Palma set for €60 million a year as funding doubles
Palma, Mallorca, is set to receive at least €60 million a year from other administrations, double its current minimum, under a law due for a vote on Tuesday. The Balearic Parliament is expected to pass it with support from the People’s Party (PP), the Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands (PSIB) and MÉS per Mallorca. Representatives of all three parties confirmed their positions on Monday, 26 October.
More money, new measures
During its passage through parliament, the bill grew from seven articles to 23. PP member Marga Durán says it would speed up planning permits and strengthen Palma’s social services. She also points to better protection for women facing violence, community policing and new civic officers tasked with ensuring people follow local rules.
Support comes with doubts
MÉS per Mallorca will vote for the law after opposing it earlier. Its representative Ferran Rosa says none of his party’s amendments were accepted, and he doubts the extra money will guarantee better public services.
The PSIB’s Mercedes Garrido says her party will support much of the law. Because parliament will vote on each article separately, the socialists will also oppose some provisions and abstain on others. Vox alone plans to vote against the bill, arguing that amendments have taken it away from its original purpose.
