Spain’s missing trees: 150-plus places map the gaps

Across Spain, groups in more than 150 municipalities map missing and dead urban trees on 3 and 4 October, putting the gaps on a website anyone can check. The effort reaches all 17 autonomous communities, including 39 provincial capitals. The organisers do not say whether any municipality on Mallorca is taking part.

What goes on the map

Participants can mark empty tree pits, stumps and dried-out trees on streets and in parks and gardens. They can also flag trees with barely any room for their roots, including those whose planting spaces are covered with cement or resin. The results of the project, called Ecomapeo Estatal – ¡Aquí falta un árbol!, can be followed at ecomapa.org throughout the weekend.

Why the groups are doing it

More than 500 associations, groups and institutions are involved. The organisers include Ecologistas en Acción and Greenpeace. They want to show local councils where urban trees are missing or struggling and press for improvements.

Their demands go beyond replacing lost trees: they want suitable soil for roots, appropriate species for each place and an end to severe pruning. The mapping follows a 2025 project in which 67 municipalities highlighted the effects of heat islands in towns and cities. The organisers are asking public authorities to support demands that emerge from the new map.
