Palma mobile robbery bid: punch knocks man unconscious

A punch to a young man’s left eye knocked him unconscious for several seconds near the Porta de Sant Antoni in Palma in the early hours of Thursday. The attacker then allegedly tried to take the dazed man’s high-end mobile while continuing to hit him. National Police arrested a man a short distance from the scene.

The two young men had been walking home when the man approached them and began confronting them, police said. According to the victims, he threatened to cut, kill or stab them before striking one of them.

The injured man’s companion stopped the alleged attacker from taking the phone and prevented further blows. As the man walked away, several people in the area gave chase and alerted a passing National Police patrol.

Officers caught him metres from where the assault happened. He admitted hitting a man, police said, but claimed he had been provoked first.

Medics treated the injured young man at the scene before taking him to hospital. The detained man is suspected of violent robbery.
