Mallorca’s Montesión heritage gets a new inventory

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca’s Jesuits unveil a new inventory of Montesión’s art and historic objects in Palma, Mallorca, on Saturday 31 October. They will present it in the former college’s cloister at 12.00, after years of work by the Xicaranda team to document and study the collection. The Society of Jesus says it has cared for Montesión’s heritage for more than four centuries.

The presentation is part of a two-day visit by Enric Puiggròs, who leads the Jesuits in Spain. It marks the feast of Saint Alonso Rodríguez, a Jesuit brother who lived at Montesión for more than four decades.

A book follows the college’s history

Jesuit leaders will also receive a new book by historians Marià Carbonell Buades and Concepció Bauçà de Mirabò. It traces how the former college has changed since its foundation in 1561 and examines its church, chapels, art and old library. The book will be presented publicly on 5 November at the Official College of Architects of the Balearic Islands.

Prayers and Mass on Saturday

Puiggròs will meet the Bishop of Mallorca, Sebastià Taltavull, on Saturday to discuss the Jesuits’ work on the island and cooperation with the diocese.

Prayer begins at 18.00 in Saint Alonso Rodríguez’s chapel in the Montesión church. Taltavull will then lead Mass at Mallorca Cathedral at 19.00. Both services are open to anyone who wishes to attend.
