Palma moped stopped after illegal 77cc conversion
A defective exhaust led police to a heavily modified moped in Palma, Mallorca, on 22 September. Officers stopped the adult rider in Calle de la Dragonera, immobilised the vehicle and ordered it removed. Four offences add up to €1,400.
Palma Local Police said a patrol from its Comprehensive Security Unit (USEI) noticed the moped because of the excessive noise from its faulty exhaust. Officers then found unauthorised changes to the engine, including an altered acceleration system, added liquid cooling and replacement carburettor and cylinder parts measuring 28 millimetres and 77 cubic centimetres.
The changes meant the vehicle no longer met the legal definition of a moped. Police said it functioned mechanically as a motorcycle above 50 cubic centimetres, while the rider held only an AM licence for mopeds.
The moped's mandatory vehicle inspection, known as ITV, had also been expired since 2024. The reports cover riding without the correct licence, illegal modifications, the defective exhaust and the overdue ITV.
