Mallorca moped rider’s give-way slip exposes fake papers
Palma, Mallorca: a moped rider’s failure to give way on 31 August leads to an investigation after an expert finds two documents he presents are forged.
A Palma Local Police patrol sees the 40-year-old Ghanaian rider pull out of a side street onto Antoni Frontera street without giving way. When officers check his identity, he shows them a card issued by an association of translators and interpreters. It is his only ID, and police call it a “fantasy” card.
Officers ask him to bring in his driving licence the next day. He hands over a document supposedly issued by the Republic of Ghana. It has expired and lacks basic security features, police say.
An expert finds both documents are forged. Police investigate the rider for document forgery and driving without a licence. Summoned for questioning, he chooses not to speak.
