Palma moped rider flees wrong way at triple drink limit
Palma, Mallorca: A moped rider heads the wrong way along the Ma-15 on 3 November after police try to stop him. Palma’s local police catch the 26-year-old after he abandons the moped and runs. A breath test later records 0.76 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled air — three times the permitted level.
Officers first spot the moped near the Son Malferit industrial estate, travelling towards Palma without its lights on. The rider has no helmet. He is pulling a cable in his right hand to accelerate.
When officers signal him to stop, he speeds through a roundabout and joins the Ma-15 against the traffic. He zigzags along the road, then uses a pedestrian-only ramp to reach Sócrates street.
The rider keeps looking back to see whether police are following. To avoid putting road safety at risk, officers switch off their warning lights and follow discreetly through parallel streets. They find the moped stopped in Gaston Vuillier street. The rider throws it down and runs into Jules Leclercq street, where officers catch him after a few metres.
Police say his alcohol reading also exceeds the threshold for a criminal offence. They are investigating him on suspicion of a road safety offence.
