Palma: mother held after son left alone at home
A boy called a relative early on Monday after he was left alone at a home in Son Gotleu, Palma, Mallorca, police said. He said he was hungry and frightened. National Police later arrested his mother on suspicion of abandoning a minor.
Calls for help
Officers arrived at the address after a call to 091 and found the boy with a male relative. The relative said the child had called him several times to say he was alone.
Police found the room hot and very untidy, with belongings on the floor. The boy cried and said his mother had left him alone many times.
The relative told officers the boy was left by himself at least three or four days a week, and called him whenever it happened.
Relatives dispute mother's account
Police reached the mother by phone and she said she was at work. When she arrived at the home, she said she would normally leave the boy with a carer while she worked.
Several relatives disputed that account, police said. After making enquiries, officers took the woman to a police station. The boy remained in the care of his relative.
