Munar, ranked 51st in the world, took Cina’s serve in the final game of the first set on his third chance to break. He raced to 4-0 in the second before Cina broke back, then finished the match in one hour and 23 minutes. Munar now faces France’s Arthur Fils, the tournament’s top seed. Fils rose to world number 10 on Monday and did not have to play the first round.

Quevedo was returning to competition after winning her first Women’s Tennis Association title in São Paulo, Brazil, in September. Ranked 79th, she recovered from an early break of serve against the 53rd-ranked Tararudee, but lost her serve again in the final game of the first set. Another break in the second ended her chances after one hour and 22 minutes.
