On Friday, prayers for the dead mark the places on the island of Eivissa and on Formentera where 20 priests were killed, a day before their beatification. The Diocese of the Pityusic Islands says the first prayer begins at 10.00 at the Parador de Dalt Vila, a former military castle on Eivissa. Seventeen priests were killed there on 13 September 1936.

Bishop Vicent Ribas then goes to Sa Carrossa on Eivissa to pray for Antonio Roig Guasch, a priest at the parish of San Francisco Javier who was shot there. He is due to travel on to La Savina on Formentera, where Juan Torres Torres was killed on 7 August 1936 and thrown into the sea. Torres was 24 and had been ordained just 44 days earlier.

At 19.00, prayers move to the church square in Sant Carles on Eivissa. Antonio Tur Costa, a priest at the local parish, was shot there alongside his father, Antonio Tur, on 8 August 1936.

The day ends at 20.30 with evening prayers at the parish church in Santa Eulària on Eivissa. The diocese will again perform ‘Himne dels Beats’, first heard last Saturday. Each prayer for the dead, known as a responso, will include ‘Amunt germans’, a traditional song of perseverance.
