Palma neighbours target late-night alcohol sales at 8 shops
Five neighbourhood associations in Palma, Mallorca, want small convenience stores with repeated incidents to close earlier at night. On 11 September, groups from Passeig Marítim, Santa Catalina and Es Jonquet, Sa Llotja-Born, Pere Garau and El Terreno asked Palma City Council to tighten rules on late-night alcohol sales.
They say measures taken so far have not stopped certain behaviour from happening again. Their request is not for a city-wide ban on alcohol sales, but for restrictions on businesses where repeat incidents have been documented.
25 reports linked to eight stores
The associations have gathered documents containing 25 complaints or references involving eight small convenience stores. Seventeen of those cases involved repeat incidents.
Some businesses in the Passeig Marítim area appear in the material as many as four times. In Pere Garau, the report also includes a private investigation which reportedly documented beer purchases after midnight at five supermarkets.
Earlier closing time proposed
The groups want the council to consider a closing period from 21.30 to 08.00 as a guide. That timetable is already provided for certain areas or commercial activities.
They also want Palma City Council to examine any other legally possible time limit that would be effective and proportionate.
