Mallorca hosts Nit de la Recerca as 100-plus join island-wide

More than 100 researchers from scientific institutions across the Balearic Islands took part in Nit de la Recerca on Friday, 25 September. Mallorca’s main event was held at Moll Vell in Palma, while activities also ran in Eivissa and Maó. The science outreach day is part of the European Researchers’ Night, a European Union initiative designed to bring research and innovation closer to the public.

Education minister Antoni Vera, health minister Manuela García and Sebastià Massanet, director general for universities, research and artistic education, visited the Palma activities. Public research centres from Mallorca, Menorca and Eivissa joined the programme.

Hands-on science in Palma

Jeroni Galmés, a biology professor at the University of the Balearic Islands, and Amparo Lázaro of the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies were the speakers opening this year’s event. A new children’s area at the Fireta Investigadora gave younger participants a chance to explore science through activities.

The Balearic Islands Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training ran sessions on livestock, farming and fishing. Participants identified and measured marine animals, discovered local breeds and crop varieties, and tested fruit sweetness in a practical workshop.

Events in Eivissa and Maó

At the Archaeological Museum of Eivissa and Formentera, museum curator Esther Pons spoke about finds from the Oxyrhynchus archaeological site in Egypt.

Maó’s programme began on Thursday with an escape room in which participants solved a mystery during a scientists’ meeting. On Friday, the Jaume Ferrer Research Station hosted a display from the photographic exhibition La Mar de Kike Ballesteros.
