Mallorca homes: non-resident buying limits weighed
Mallorca homes could face non-resident buying limits under measures being considered by the Balearic Government. In Palma on 10 September, government spokesman and vice-president Antoni Costa said officials would assess whether proposals in a European housing bill could work. One option would limit purchases of second homes by people who do not live on the islands.
The draft could also allow territories to declare themselves areas under housing pressure. That could bring restrictions on property purchases by companies, charges on empty homes and a ban on tourist flats.
Costa said the information about the European plan was recent and the government did not know when it might become reality. He said the administration was open to measures that help Balearic residents find homes, but ruled out price caps, which it considers counterproductive and harmful to the most vulnerable people.
The government would apply restrictions on non-resident buyers if they become a genuine proposal rather than a trial balloon, Costa said, and if they help Balearic citizens gain access to housing.
