Menorca party wants ban on non-resident home buyers

Menorca’s housing crisis will continue unless non-residents are barred from buying homes on the island, Més per Menorca warns on Friday, 2 October 2026. The party’s general coordinator, Esteve Barceló, says demand from people buying second homes is pushing up prices for families who live there.

Barceló says some buyers use their homes for only a few weeks a year. On an island with limited land and strong pressure from tourism, he argues, that demand puts local families in direct competition with buyers from elsewhere. He warns that young people could be forced to leave Menorca if they cannot afford a home.

A ban would not be enough on its own, he says. Més per Menorca also wants more public housing, empty homes brought back into use, rules for holiday lets and more affordable homes built for residents.

The party is urging the Balearic Islands government, the Menorca Island Council, the People’s Party (PP) and the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) to press the Spanish state and European institutions for powers to give island residents priority in access to housing. It has not set out when such rules might take effect.
