Mallorca: Around 160 people in yellow T-shirts protest outside the Parliament of the Balearic Islands in Palma on Tuesday, 6 October, over minimum rules for staff educating children aged up to three. The estimate comes from Palma Local Police. The protesters, from Xarxa 0-3 and the CCOO, STEI and UGT unions, say the Balearic government’s decree copies rules already in place.

Whistles, pans and megaphones sound outside the parliament. Protesters call for a collective agreement and chant that educating children from birth to three is more than looking after them.

Xarxa 0-3 spokesperson Noelia Jiménez gives the protest a positive assessment, but says the situation is “complicated” and the group feels “misled”. She says the government took advantage of the network’s good faith in trying to act peacefully and reasonably, and accuses the Balearic Ministry of Education and Universities of pulling a trick on them.
