Mallorca nursery staff get pay boost from January 2027

Early-years teachers and technicians at state-funded private nurseries across the Balearics will move onto a government-run payroll system from January 2027. Parliament in Palma approved the education decree on 9 September, alongside a new supplement intended to narrow pay gaps. The measure covers concerted 0–3 centres, known locally as escoletes, that are not integrated into the public system.

PP and Vox carried the vote with 32 votes. PSIB and the Mixed Group voted against with 21, while MÉS per Mallorca’s four MPs abstained.

Payroll change and pay supplement

The Balearic Government will pay the wages directly through delegated payroll, although staff will remain employed by the private companies running the centres. Until now, this arrangement applied across concerted education except the 0–3 stage.

The decree also creates an equalisation supplement. It is designed to reduce salary differences for workers doing equivalent jobs in publicly funded centres, without changing their employment terms or collective agreement.

Education and Universities Minister Antoni Vera called the decree necessary and said it would make a tangible difference to educators’ lives. But PSIB MP Àlex Pitaluga said it had been passed without a specific pay scale and warned it would not reach all escoletes staff. Més per Menorca’s Joana Gomila said the plan would not end pay inequality across the sector.

Hospital staff can take on university teaching

The same decree changes the Balearic university system to strengthen teaching by health professionals from hospitals and health centres. Posts at the Balearic Health Service, IbSalut, can be linked to different university teaching roles.

Health staff supervising placements, tutoring students or taking part in seminars and clinical sessions can receive a teaching supplement while keeping their IbSalut employment. Agreements between the Balearic Government, the health service and the University of the Balearic Islands will set out linked posts, teaching and care duties, coordination, monitoring and compensation.
