Mallorca: Palma nursery staff miss out on €500 a month
In Palma, Mallorca, nursery educator Cristina Martí says staff earning €1,200 a month are missing out on €500 in agreed pay supplements. On 20 October 2026, opposition parties PSIB, MÉS per Palma and Unidas Podemos pressed Palma City Council for answers about a stalled contract for municipal nurseries. They put forward a joint motion for the October council meeting.
A contract stuck in the tender process
The dispute centres on the escoletes, council nurseries under indirect management. Martí says the agreed supplements have not been paid. Improvements included in a new contract are also on hold because the council has yet to award it.
The council cancelled its first tender twice over errors in the process. It launched another in June 2026, with a decision expected in September, but an appeal by one of the bidding companies stopped it again. Workers and their representatives say they do not know what the appeal contains or where it stands.
Staff seek answers and lost pay
Martí says staff asked for three meetings about the contract and all three were cancelled. She says the nurseries also lack cover for absent staff and have too few educators, leaving children with special educational needs without support.
The opposition parties want regular updates on the tender and its likely timetable. They are asking the council to publish the appeal and related documents where the law allows, and to examine ways to compensate workers for pay lost since September 2026. The motion also calls for the council to report back on what it has done. There is no confirmed date for the new contract to take effect.
