Mallorca nursery classes lose out as only 20 of 49 posts fill

Palma nursery classes could lose early-years education technicians when 16 nine-month appointments end, union STEI says. On Wednesday, the union accused the Balearic Ministry of Education and Universities of failing to deliver the 49 posts it had announced for the 0-to-3 stage. It says only 20 posts have gone to early-years education technicians, known as TEI.

Of those 20 appointments, 16 were made for nine months because of production circumstances, according to STEI. The other four are vacant posts. The ministry has not yet said how it will ensure the technicians’ work continues after the temporary appointments finish, the union said.

29 posts allocated to teachers

STEI says the remaining 29 posts were allocated to teachers, despite the ministry’s promise that they would be TEI jobs. The union says the switch has a bigger impact because covering the work of one TEI post requires one and a half teaching posts.

That means the 29 announced posts have become 43.5 teaching posts, STEI said. It argues that the need was already known and the posts had been announced to schools.

The union called the situation unacceptable and said a similar problem affected the filling of TEI posts in the previous school year. It is demanding an explanation from the education ministry over what happens next.
