Early-years educators will gather at Plaza de Cort in Palma, Mallorca, at 19.00 on Thursday, the first day of the new school year, to demand improvements in nursery education. Parallel rallies are planned at Plaza Biosfera on Menorca and Vera de Rei on Eivissa. Xarxa 0-3 has called the protests with backing from the CCOO, UGT and STEI unions.

Employers accused of blocking deal

The organisers say employers' groups are blocking negotiations for a Balearic Islands collective agreement. They are also calling for an urgent review of the decree setting minimum standards.

More action is planned

Thursday's rallies follow Wednesday's protest outside Parliament and are the second action in Xarxa 0-3's planned campaign at the start of term. On the 18th, educators plan to lock themselves inside the nursery schools, known locally as escoletes, alongside pupils' relatives.

A demonstration is scheduled for the 25th. If nothing changes, a general strike will begin on 6 October. The Assemblea de Docents has also urged teachers to wear yellow T-shirts on the first day of term in support of the nursery educators' demands.
