Palma approves million-euro purchase of two nurseries
Palma has approved a million-euro purchase that will bring the Santa Catalina and Ciutat Antiga early-years centres into municipal ownership. The decision, taken on 16 September, covers buildings owned by Fundació Hogares Infantiles del Niño Jesús, an organisation linked to the Diocese of Mallorca. The Santa Catalina site will cost one million six hundred thousand euros, while the Ciutat Antiga building on Jaume Lluís Garau Street will cost one million nine hundred thousand euros.
Together, the purchase comes to nearly three and a half million euros. Government spokeswoman Mercedes Celeste said municipal ownership will allow both centres to join Palma's network of escoletes, the city's early-years centres.
Palma City Council also has a cooperation agreement with the Municipal Board of Escoletes to bring maintenance contracts and management for municipal centres under one system. The council says this should allow repairs and improvements to be planned more closely and maintenance services to work more efficiently across the centres.
