Mallorca nurses set to lead health zones under new rules

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca nurses are set to gain the right to run local health zones and receive pay that reflects the responsibility. On Thursday, 8 October, the Balearic Parliament in Palma, Mallorca, added amendments to a law that would open the posts to nurses and other healthcare staff in professional subgroup A2. The Partido Popular (PP) proposed the changes; PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca and Unidas Podemos also voted for them, according to the PP.

Why the rules are changing

Nurses had called for the change. An interpretation of national rules by the Supreme Court had reserved the leadership posts for staff in subgroup A1. Under the amendments, pay would depend on the work and responsibility of the post, not the professional category of the person holding it.

What happens to current health zone leaders

Appointments made before the law takes effect would remain in place, avoiding the need to remove and reappoint people already doing the job. Future leaders would be chosen from A1 and A2 healthcare staff in primary care teams after their management plans have been assessed.
