Mallorca joins talks on 15 homes for older people
Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, is part of talks over 15 public homes for people over 65 who struggle to find or keep somewhere to live. The pilot plan was discussed on Thursday, 15 October, at a meeting on Menorca, another Balearic island. Under a draft agreement with the Balearic Housing Institute, the Balearic government would make the homes available to island councils.
Who could get a home
The homes would offer temporary accommodation, particularly to older people with too little income, no family support or a risk of losing their home. Island councils would assess applicants through social reports covering their finances, family circumstances and housing situation.
The draft does not say how many of the 15 homes would be on Mallorca. Guillermo Sánchez, Mallorca’s councillor for social welfare, said cooperation between public bodies was essential to give older people without family support an alternative.
A change to social services funding
The meeting also covered changes to a €49.2 million funding plan for local social services from 2025 to 2027. Councils would have more flexibility when accounting for the money: staff absences or reduced hours would not necessarily cost an entire team its funding.
Island authorities also discussed restarting committees that would work together on the terms of the next funding plan.
