Formentera olive mill opens, ending off-island trips

Olive growers on Formentera will no longer have to send their crop off the island to be turned into oil when the new olive oil mill begins its first campaign on 30 September. The plant can process up to 800 kilos an hour. Formentera Island Council and the Formentera Farming Cooperative are launching the facility together to support local agriculture.

Bookings and separate production

The booking system opens on the 28th, with appointments made directly through the cooperative. There is no limit on the number of kilos each producer can bring.

Growers must show whether their olives are registered as organic or conventional. The mill will keep those two types of production separate.

Discounts for the first campaign

The Island Council will reduce the service cost during the mill’s first year. Once production is complete, producers will collect their oil in the available containers, which will be charged to them and labelled under health requirements and current rules.

The first campaign will also test the mill’s procedures, allowing the council to refine its organisation and identify improvements for future seasons.
