Mallorca’s olive oil and olives take a Spanish association to 100 members: the island’s two protected-origin labels join Origen España. The association announced the milestone on 13 October 2026. The new members are Aceite de Mallorca, for olive oil, and Oliva de Mallorca, for olives.

Origen España began with three members in 2008. Its president, Ángel Pacheco, says the Mallorcan producers show how traditional methods are shaped by the land where they work.

Olive oil growers seek fair pay

The Aceite de Mallorca label entered the European Union’s register of protected designations of origin in 2002. Olive oil production has recovered since the label was created, but making it pay remains a challenge. The label now covers more than 3,600 hectares and 500,000 olive trees, with 11 mills, 19 bottling businesses and nearly 800 growers.

Joan Mayol, president of Aceite de Mallorca, says growers need fair pay for their work and olives. Without it, he says, they cannot sustain a tradition passed down through generations.

Olives grown by hand on mountain terraces

The Oliva de Mallorca label entered the European Union register in 2014. It covers about 70,000 olive trees across 500 hectares. Much of the crop grows on terraces in the Serra de Tramuntana, where heavy machinery cannot be used and every task must be done by hand.

Andreu Oliver, president of Oliva de Mallorca, says the label has helped keep that work profitable and preserve the landscape. Pacheco says the next aim is to make Mallorca’s olives better known elsewhere in Spain and abroad.
