Mallorca olive oil tourism plan takes first step

Mallorca has taken its first formal step towards olive oil tourism. On 10 September, the Consell de Mallorca voted to join the Spanish Association of Olive Municipalities, AEMO, opening the route for the island to seek a place in the national Oleoturismo España network.

The scheme aims to turn olive growing and oil production into sustainable, quality tourism. It is about more than the oil itself: olive landscapes, growing areas, mills, food, traditional trades and the island’s long-standing olive culture are all part of the offer. AEMO runs the project with eight provincial councils.

Toni Fuster, the Consell’s presidency councillor, said Mallorca should not be left out of an initiative tied to its history, landscape and way of life. He stressed that the aim is not to bring in more tourists, but to help those already on the island discover and value local products.

Joining AEMO is a required step before Mallorca can be certified as an Oleoturismo España destination and enter the programme. Island municipalities could then join the shared promotion without applying to AEMO separately. Businesses connected to the sector could also later sign up to the project, which is intended to support farmers, producers, mills and local companies that keep olive oil culture alive.
