Mallorca: 175 ORA spaces spark Palma parking row

Plans for 175 ORA short-stay parking spaces in Pere Garau, Palma, Mallorca, have drawn criticism from the neighbourhood platform Flipau amb Pere Garau. On Wednesday, the group called on Palma City Council to review the parking zone. It wants a fairer split between spaces for residents and those serving shoppers and businesses.

ORA is a short-stay parking system that requires a timed ticket. Flipau amb Pere Garau says residents cannot use these spaces without paying.

Three streets face more short-stay spaces

On Carrer Faust Morell, Palma City Council’s Mobility Department plans 73 ORA spaces on the even-numbered side. The street currently has 20 short-stay spaces and 37 active businesses.

On Carrer Torcuato Luca de Tena, the department proposes setting aside the odd-numbered side for ORA parking. That would raise the total from 23 spaces to 43.

The platform is particularly critical of the proposal for Carrer Benet Pons i Fàbregues. It says the street has few buildings with underground parking, angled bays and 28 active businesses. The plan puts both sides of the street into short-stay rotation, creating 175 spaces.

Call for more resident parking

Carrer Reis Catòlics has 53 commercial premises, while all 78 ORA spaces are currently reserved for short-stay rotation. Flipau amb Pere Garau wants the even-numbered side designated as ORA parking for residents, which it says would add more than 100 spaces for them.

The platform says a new assessment of the parking rules is “necessary and urgent”. It argues that sustainable mobility, vehicle turnover and protection for residents must be balanced more closely with the reality of Pere Garau.
