Mallorca bin cut: Llucmajor loses an organic-waste pickup

Organic waste in Llucmajor, Mallorca, is due to be collected twice a week rather than three under a rubbish contract approved on Friday, 4 September. The local PSOE says the final deal was passed without input from residents or the opposition. It warns that the cut will worsen the service and residents’ quality of life.

Jaume J. Oliver, the PSOE’s municipal spokesman, said the process echoes the mistakes made in 2015, when the contract that has governed rubbish collection until now was negotiated and approved.

Oliver also criticised the conduct of the ruling team during the council session. He said Mayor Xisca Lascolas did not speak at any point, while Vox councillor Marga Palmer tried to justify a contract he says began with serious shortcomings.

The PSOE says there is still no plan for the handover period before the contractor can put the new service in place. Oliver said he had asked more than six times what would happen while the contract was being launched, but had received no answer.

He said the problems would continue until the new firm is properly up and running.
