Palma airport: parties target €621.6m growth plan
€621.6 million set aside for Palma Airport on Mallorca is at the heart of a new political row over future air traffic. MÉS per Palma and Unides Podem will take a motion to Palma City Council on Thursday calling for the plans to be reviewed. They want Spain’s central government and Aena to halt any increase in operating capacity and cut passenger numbers at Balearic airports.
The parties are targeting DORA III, the airport regulation plan for 2027 to 2031. Aena’s new investment cycle sets aside more than €1,000 million for airports across the Balearics during that period, including €621.6 million for Palma Airport.
Parties say investment means more flights
MÉS per Palma and Unides Podem say the money is intended to prepare the infrastructure for a greater volume of air traffic. They reject any suggestion that the work is simply about comfort improvements or modernisation.
They argue that the plans reinforce tourism growth while access to housing has become one of the main social concerns in Palma and Mallorca. Their motion calls for tourism to shrink rather than expand, with housing, sustainability and quality of life placed at the centre of public policy.
Protest backs calls to curb growth
The parties also point to a demonstration in Palma on 20 September, when hundreds of people called for airport growth to stop and for limits on tourism promotion policies. The protest was convened by the Platform Against Airport Expansion and backed by social, environmental and neighbourhood groups.
Their motion also seeks what it calls real joint management of airports, giving Balearic institutions a stronger role in strategic decisions. The parties say those decisions directly shape the archipelago’s economic, social and territorial future.
