Palma Airport tobacco gang linked to €11,000 theft
Two men were arrested at Palma Airport on 5 September after an off-duty Guardia Civil officer allegedly saw one keep watch near a shop while the other hid tobacco cartons in hand luggage. The pair, aged 34 and 38, are suspected of being part of a gang linked to the theft of at least 162 cartons worth more than €11,000. Two other suspected members had already been arrested.
The Guardia Civil says the group bought cheap air tickets to gain legal access to the restricted boarding area. Once inside, they used headphones to stay in touch before going to terminal shops.
Investigators say some members watched for staff or distracted them while others moved the tobacco to parts of the shops out of employees’ sight. The cartons were allegedly destined for the United Kingdom, where their value was said to triple.
The latest arrests have helped police link five offences to the group’s four alleged members. Both men, who are from an eastern European country, have been handed to the judicial authorities.
