Palma Airport waiting area criticised by CCOO

Workers’ Commissions (CCOO) said on 18 August that conditions in the waiting area at Palma de Mallorca Airport, Mallorca, are inadequate for more than 1,000 drivers each day. The union said the area is used around the clock by drivers in regular and discretionary transport, private-hire vehicles and taxis.

CCOO held airport director Tomás Melgar, employers’ associations and companies in the sector responsible for what it described as substandard facilities. It called on airport operator Aena and the companies involved to upgrade the area urgently.

Toilets and cleaning

The union said there is one toilet for each gender for more than 1,000 workers using the waiting area on rotating shifts over 24 hours. It added that the facilities are cleaned once a day.

CCOO said the arrangements fail to meet basic workplace standards and called for facilities that protect workers’ health and dignity.

Heat and lack of cooling

Drivers can face temperatures of up to 40C beneath a roof that, according to CCOO, provides insufficient protection from summer sun and winter cold. The union said companies do not allow drivers to leave vehicle engines running for air conditioning in order to save fuel.

It said the canteen is the only air-conditioned option, but alleged that its prices make it difficult for workers to remain there if they do not buy anything.
